Tips and Techniques

When ephemera are equally as important as the photo, include both.  In this instance the ephemera for this LO was a letter from my great-great-great uncle and aunt to my grandparents on the loss of their son “Little Lennie” when he was but a young infant.  All my life I grew up knowing of my uncle, “Little Lennie”, however it wasn’t until I discovered this letter to my grandparents whilst scouring around doing the family history that it all became quite real for me.  To scrap this photo on its own would not have told the full story. However to include a scanned copy of the original letter would have taken over the LO.  The solution was to type the letter and print it on an inkjet transparency.  This way the letter would not take over the LO and although not clearly legible in some parts, the primary points of interest in the letter could be read. As an added bonus I printed a complete copy of the letter and adhered it to the reverse of the LO.  Dare I admit it LOL?  The family historian in me wouldn’t allow me to do anything else!

Ordinarily we might block patterned paper on plain cardstock for contrast.  Why not have a go at doing the reverse and block subtle patterned paper or plain cardstock on busy patterned paper.  It really helps the bulk of your LO to ‘pop’ off the page.

Gone are the days when almost every LO we created had large, bulky, oft times chipboard, titles. If you have the space, go for it! However if your LO is already busy and comprises a lot of layering, try using smaller alphas (in this instance rub-ons) for your title.

When working with transparencies, remember the varying elements of your LO can be placed either behind or in front of the transparency.  Using a mixture of both as I have done on this LO will help to create a beautifully ‘blended’ result.
