What makes a layout 'pop'?

Sometimes we create layouts and stand back to admire them but there's just something missing. My solution is to go back to design elements and principles. Some suggestions for you to check out if you get stuck, follow:

Uses:

My Minds Eye Sophie paper

Ruby Rock-it felt frames

green Tara flowers

Glimmer Mist

Crafter's Workshop template

cardstock

striped ribbon

droplet stickers - don't know where I got these

but everything else is from Scrap N Craft with T - of course

Line, shape, space

We need lines, actual or implied, to move the eye around the page eg the implied lines created by the triangle of 3 repeated green felt oval elements. The actual lines from the ribbons that draw the eye across the photo. The swirls and water drops also imply direction.

Shapes help create mood and movement eg the organic shapes of flowers and swirls create a relaxed feel to the layout.

Open spaces ('white space') around page elements allow the eye to rest and give more emphasis to the focal point. It helps balance the page. I added subtle decoration ( mask and mist, water drop stickers) to the white space because it was such such a large area and it helped direct the eye.

Texture

The textures on a page help create dimension and visual interest as well as supporting the theme and mood eg water drop stickers link to swimming, the soft textures of the felt, ribbons, and curled flowers enhance the loving mood of the relationship of the two subjects.

Dimension is added through 3 D layers and curling of papers giving more appeal than a flat layout.

Colour

Colour scheme should suit the theme eg blue green cool colours with swimming photo. They are also restful, peaceful colours.

Contrast in colour values adds interest eg small amounts of the dark teal in the flowers amongst lighter greens to create unity and balance.

Focal point

Is the main focus of the layout on what you want - the main photo? Focal point is emphasised by contrast in size, colour, line and shape, and placement. In this layout the photo is matted in patterned paper and white in high contrast and most embellishments surround it. It is a rectangle amongst curved shapes and at an angle but most significantly, my daughters face is in the "sweet spot" (imagine the page divided in thirds horizontally and vertically - where these lines overlap are the sweet spots or positions most appealing to the eye). While the focal point stands out it still has unity with the rest of the layout.

OK schools out now!

Hope this can help you too.

Template fun with Echo Park Christmas - by Nicky Amber

Today I have used one of the new templates Tanyah has instore to create this layout.  I have created this layout in preparation for this coming Christmas, leaving space for photos to be added later.  Sometimes when I see papers I just get an idea without knowing what photos I'm actually going to use.

You can find all the different types of templates HERE.
I have used the scalloped frames template,

which I found wonderful to use - it lets you create a variety of scalloped frames from just under 1 inch right up to just under 12 inches.  You can cut out solid shapes or a outline shape (like the green scallop outline in the layout below).

I have also cut out a scallop shape with the template, then cut it in half to create a journalling tag.

I have used the Echo Park Christmas range 'Everybody Loves Christmas' range.  The papers I used for this layout were...
'Trim the Tree'
and 'Ornaments'

because they lend themselves so well to being fussy cut (cut out individual shapes) and their reverse sides were nice and bright too.

Check out the templates in store,  there are so many different ones and so many different ways they can be used (with painting mediums, to cut out shapes etc) and best of all they can be used over and over again.

If you have used any templates in your projects please share with us in the Scrap N Craft with T gallery  HERE.

Happy creating...xxxooo

Step by step layout by Tanyah Payne

Hope the weekend was a wonderful one for lots of you out their, Thankyou to so many of you that pop in here and check out what everyone is up to. We get a buzz when you comment, for your feedback  makes it all worth while.

With all this new product coming into the shop lately I had to have a play. As some of you may know texture & mess is my world within scrapping. Getting  your hands a bit dirty is heaps of fun!...

So I have decided to use the Dark Room Door NEW products Viva range - Ferro. Man alive this is like a moose like texture to apply you can almost eat it....lol. BUT when it drys the colours are so vibrant, with a sand paper like texture.... it is a fun product to work with and would recommend it to anyone that LOVES TEXTURE......

Here is my creation from friday night... early morning....lol!

Products used:

Check out Nic Creates NEW COLOURS of Rolly Roses... they are divine and beautiful to work with.

  1. Using a place and white patterned paper like Bella Melrose Vintage pattered cardstock your then able to colour your paper any way you need to match your photos.
  2. Place your paper on a mat or inside a box and spray your Glimmer mist: key lime, yellow across the page. Change over to other colours you require
  3. Leave to dry
  4. Find your Crafters Workshop Templates - Swirls and place over your page as desired
  5. Using your finger or a pallet knife use the Dark Room Door - Viva Decor - Ferro - Silver quite generously and lay it over your template. When covered areas are finished take your template off and wait for it to dry. I did use a heat gun to speed this process up a bit.
  6. Using one 5x7" photo and 2 smaller 4x3" photos I sanded the edges and places where i wanted them to go
  7. At the top left corner i cut out a shape and placed Felt in the missing hole
  8. Using a scallop ruler/ using your corner rounder punch and make a template. I then made a scallop border out of Felt and placed at the bottom of the photo.
  9. Lay  Lace over the top of the Felt
  10. Using  Nic Creates, - Rolly Roses - Purple mix  I created my flower cluster along with adding the pearly bling flower from Prima Swirls/flower blings flourishes.
  11. Placed a raw 2 Crafty chipboard swirls under the  Nic Creates, - Rolly Roses - Purple mix  flowers
  12. Using the Prima Swirls/flower blings   cut a small amount and placed it at the top left of the page.
  13. Then using the Bella - Fundamentals - felt butterflies  and placed these on the swirls.
  14.

Thankyou for reading and hope I have inspired you to create your own paper beyond what it originally was.

'Strong'; a step-by-step single layout by Ingeborg Dijkstra

I took this picture of my husband recently. When I saw the KaiserCraft Offshore Collection, I knew the colours would look perfect together! I have loved KaiserCraft papers for years now, because of the versatily and the fact that they are double-sided too! I started with a sheet of 'White Cap' paper (see below).
On the back of this paper was a wavy pattern, which I decided to cut out. I also added a strip of the striped 'Tide' paper.

I placed my photo a bit under the light blue curve and I also stamped some flourishes in the corners (sorry I didn't take a picture of this).
I wanted to add a personal touch to the layout and decided to grab one of my favourite products: the Bazzil In Stitch Template Formal Flourish:
I wanted to keep the wavy pattern going, so I chose this template:

I first pierced the holes and then I handstitched the flourish in blue.

The layout looked like this at this stage:

I used another sheet of the Offshore Collection ('Breaker') to further embellish the layout. I cut a journaling tag from the sheet. I cut some of the orange and blue 'splashes' out of the paper too.
Using foam dots I stuck the splashes on the layout. I also inked the edges to make them stand out a bit more.
I wrote the following Scripture on the tag:"That’s why I take pleasure in my weaknesses, and in the insults, hardships, persecutions, and troubles that I suffer for Christ. For when I am weak, then I am strong." 2 Corinthians 12:10

Double layout by Tanyah Payne along with a sketch to try...

Today I wanted to show you a double layout I (Tanyah Payne) created using the Ruby Rock-it- Summerhouse range. It is bright with all the oranges, teal/blues, limes and is fantastic for many different themed projects. If you want to see more projects that I  have created for BELLA click here! you can also create my mini album I am honoured to be able to teach at SIA (scrapbooking Industry Australia) using this lovely range...

If you would like to create this project remember we have till the end of the month our 25% off all papers, kits and cardstock for you to enjoy!

Product List.

Here are some Tips to try....
  •  Using your cuttlebug emboss your chipboard, ink and go over the top with a lighter coloured ink
  •  Using raw chipboard can be fun along with painting them too.
  • Creating textured leaves on the tree, i have used maya resist and left it on then painting it.
  • Templates are my friend...lol! why not use the negitive and positive of your cut out shapes, tear/distress the edges
  • Use sequin ribbon as a title
  • Cut circles under the chipboard tree shape to give the tree a different look.
Note: the circles on the tree was inspired by Alison Callcott... thanks heaps alz xoxox
and the sequined title was inspired by Melinda Spinks... thanks so much Melinda xoxox

Here is a sketch for those who would like to have a go, no limit of time it has to be done by but if you want some inspiration and have a go. We would love to see in our gallery..

You make me smile - step-by-step layout and sketch by Nicky Amber

Here's a step by step using the new Birch double-sided cardstock.
This cardstock features a glittered design on one side and co-ordinating pattern on the back.

Materials:
Instructions:
  • I wanted to continue the 'glittered' look of the patterned paper so I used the white cardstock as a base and sprayed glimmermist around the border of the page (I think I got a bit carried away but I was having fun doing it).
  • I machine stitched a couple of rows around the border of the white cardstock.
Note:  If you want this 'spattered' look but don't have glimmermist you could try using some watered down paint in a mister bottle.

  • I cut the pink cardstock to approx. 11.5 x 6 inches then used the mini orchard template to shape the ends of the cardstock.

  •   Using the white pen I doodled a border around the edges of the shaped pink cardstock.

  • Using the Birch patterned paper (glittered side) I cut an 8 x 8 inch square from the top right-hand corner.
  • I then cut around the two owls and flowers from the bottom left-hand corner.

  • I distressed the edges of the 8 x 8 inch patterned paper and lightly brushed the edges with paint. I also machine stitched a couple of rows around the border.

  • I attached the shaped piece of pink cardstock to the left-hand side of the page.
  • I then placed the patterned paper (with a slight tilt) on the page overlapping the pink cardstock.
  • I attached the title using the mini alpha stickers and the thickers to the bottom of the pink cardstock. I have used the new fabric thickers for the title - they give a really nice texture.
  • I attached green rhinestones over the machine stitching on the base cardstock.  Two to the top right and three to the bottom left-hand edges.
  • I also attached green rhinestones to the centre of three flowers on the patterned paper.

  • I matted a 4 x 6 photo with green cardstock and distressed the edges
  • Then attached over the patterned paper.  I didn't want to cover up too much of the glittered design on the patterned paper so I placed the photo quite low down on the page.
  • I attached the cut out owls to the left-hand side of the page.

I thought it needed something in the bottom right-hand corner so...
  • From the reverse side of the patterned paper, I cut a strip approx. 10cm long.
  • From the pink cardstock, I cut a strip approx. 3cm x 10cm long and used this to mat the patterned paper strip. I have distressed the edges of the pink cardstock.

  • I attached this strip to the bottom right-hand side corner.  Tucking one end under the photo and wrapping the other end around to the back of the page and securing.
  • I attached two buttons over the strip near the photo.
  • All done!!

  • Here's a sketch based on this layout.

I hope you can use this sketch to create a layout of your own.  It would be fantastic to see your wonderful creations in the gallery.

I just loved working with the Birch glittered papers - so sweet, very reasonably priced and if you're not a pink person they have a boy range as well.

Enjoy and take care!

I (Tanyah Payne) have been scrapping!.... yay!!!

It is hard for me to beleive that I have been scrapping up a storm and keeping to my commitment of having some me time at least once a week.

So here are some layouts of late that i have created and been having a blast!

****************************************
 ABOUT A BOY.... WE LOVE....

How Grown up is my boy!....
I have used the Fancy Pants ( my favourite brand) papers.
Also i thought it would be cool to use my crafters workshop templates and cut one side and then flip the paper over and place on the other side.... fun hey! then added some doddling around the bracket.
I am enjoying using the Chellebean Designs too amongst my clusters of embelishments of mayroad clocks, bollywood trims, raffia, mesh, arrows and painted doodled chipboard swirl.
ORANGE seems to be my thing at the moment... you wouldn't think so but wow i am enjoy using it heaps!
I find when wanting to put more than one photo on a page reducing the size of the pics helps this out heaps.....

****************************************

CHERISH YOUR LOVED ONES....this i do!

I love using Kraft cardstock and enjoy the possiblities it gives... In this layout i have used the crafters workshop Templates several times... The one template i have used for the red cardstock, the pink circle, and the painted dots.... cool hey! these templates are so versitle i love it!

With using Templates i had what i thought a fantastic idea and cut out of my cricut tones of circles and the template left behind i used as a circle template to paint over the red  cardstock.

After Tearing / distressing the edges and placing it on my page i then doodled all around the edge of the bracket shape.

The swirl words was a paper i was given from Robyn Payne at the last scrap chat retreat she was at. Brillant paper and adore its possiblities. I have used the swirl look to flow with the bottom teared edge and hand made flowers. Along with a cluster of bits and peices and some buttons from Tiddlypeep designs.... I also wanted to break up the kraft dominate look so i placed some red tule under the papers.....was tones of fun creating!....

****************************************
ALWAYS SWEET-... how long will it last!..
Here I wanted to create a sweet fun loving page of my kiddies.... adding 2 photos, one that is larger and is seen first where the other is an added pic showing their love and kindness.

After placing a green pp down on the right, again fancy pants - frosted range...hehe!... I cut out a cirle and scollop shape and placed under the green paper. Then I painted a chipboard frame and than painted dots over the top...

As I am enjoying paint i painted on the top quite messily and splattered....lol and then layered another ruled line pp of the frosted range of fancy pants to one side for journaling.

After Sanding my photots I placed them on my layout. Now because I LOVE LOTS OF STUFF. and thouse who know me well will know what i mean...lol! I couldn't help myself and add a few chellebean embellishments painted chipbord bits and peices, felt and mesh to make my pretty garden.

Then after titling and journaling I decided my layout needed some sewing so i did some hand sewing on the top right corner to add the finishing touches.

****************************************
ALWAYS......

Have you tried using part of your journaling as your TITLE?... now thats a thought?.... This layout was inspired scraping with Nicky Amber with all her paint techniques she loves to do.

I love scraping with others for you can learn and share so much from each other.

So i have painted white around the edges, doodled around the white part, and sploshed some paint onto my layout.

Again I have used the crafters workshop for the bracket frame and then doodled... Oh I am loving this doodling too... so much fun! ... time conshuming but fun!...hehe.

Then I had a thought, why not use 2 templates at once... So i drew and cut a template and then used a swirl template which i layered over the top, painted and then doodling around the edges... cool hey!...

Of couse it wouldn't be me without the cluster of embelishments which I have used chellebean designs and then dressed it up more with a bollywood trim and another colour of tissue paper, along with sizzix die cuts and my own made flowers, Bella and prima flowers....

After placing the photo and mesh down and the title/phrase i felt it needed a little someting in the corner.. some may not think so but i did...lol! so a white basic rubon it is!....lol!

Here are some closer looks of the page...
****************************************
LOVE YOU
This is quite a simple  layout for me and was able to comple in an hour... yeap you read right... that is a record for me ...lol!

Again I have used the one pattern paper and turn over the bottom. Placed mesh under the bottom part and place a bird paper underneith.

I used the crafters workshop template again for my bracket edge.

Texture is my think and LOVE... so when i saw this mesh i had to have it! So i have scolloped one edge used as a centre of a flower

Chellebean designs were used again where I layered over the fancy pants felt shapes.

Notice i have used a 7 gypsy transparncy for my journaling and have tucked it under the photo to keep it firm and in place.

Raffia seems to be a trend atm and people are loving it including me...lol! love all the different things you can create with it!... worth having a go at for sure!..

****************************************
YOU ARE MY EVERYTHING...

You may say ... yep another overdone layout by Tanyah... well your right!...lol! and I am still not totally happy with this one but i think that happens to all of us until one day it clicks and you think it needs something or take something off.

The sewing was all done by hand and took me 3 hours to do... crazy hey! but it was relaxing...lol! then the doodled edge to difine the boarder.

Chellebean designs is used again, These fabric flowers are yumo! and look brillant on layouts, cards and more!

I am still not sure about the paint in the top left corner and I think i will change this when i get a chance...hehe.

****************************************
NO MORE!.... PHOTOS

How often do we hear this no matter what age they are!...lol! joys of having a scrapbook mum I say!...lol!

Again I have used the crafters workshop template under the photo, Used a chipboard swirl which i have painted and stamped onto. Then my cluster of embelishments at the bottom of maya road clocks, bella flowers and my obsession with Chellebean design flowers....hehe!

Oh we can for get the mesh at the bottom and the sewing at the top too!...lots of fun!

****************************************
SMILE!...
My nephew draws at my heart strings .... he is adorble. We go these pics for he so much wanted to be like my ben and get his pics done too!... but do you think he would smile for me!....lol!

Lots of pics on this one....7 in total! how cool is that on a single layout. But i have only used small pics to help with this.

Again using my crafters workshop template as a guide for my brad scollop edge and a smaller template for the framing of the main photo.

I love these bobunny gypsy range papers they are so bright and fun! and then mixed the frosted fancy pants range (which were in my scraps) to embellish it more!.

Have you ever thought of using  a paisley shape and converting it to a bird,...thats what i have done... isn't it cool!...lol!

****************************************
OUR FAMILY....2009
This was my Christmas gift was a family pic!...lol! well they did beautifully and I got some awesome pics... ... Man I love my family! thank you!.. xx

Here I have used the Collage press die cut shapes, template, raffia, bella flowers, paper string, chellebeans desings, maya road clocks.... Along with the Crate paper range was very cute ....
