Using Layout Kits - by Annie Zorzo

Have you ever tried using a layout kit?  You'll find that everything you need is there in the kit already cordinated, and not necessarily with papers from the same range, so you don't have to go matching things up.  You can use it to make more than one layout and with the leftovers, and there generally are left overs, you can make up some cards!  So this week, I've used a monthly kit of Tanyah's to make a layout.

In the kit, I had (the ones with an asterisk are the ones I used on this layout):

• Savannah - Fairy Dust Paper by Three Bugs in a Rug *
• Little Sprout - Baby's Breath Paper by Fancy Pants *
• Lydia - Light Floral Paper by GCD Studios
• Floral Lace Paper *
• Pink, Pale Blue * and Mid Blue Cardstock
• Teeny Tiny Stickers by Sam & Lucy *
• Rhinestone word by Kaisercraft *
• Mesh Ribbon *
• Lace *
• Floral Sprays *
• Paper flowers

And this is what I come up with:

To make a layout like this:
1.  Trim the Floral Lace Paper to the shape I wanted. 
2.  Peel the self adhesive backing off the lace paper and carefully put the lace paper down somewhere with the sticky side up.
3.  OPTIONAL STEP...I used the pale blue cardstock, but I wanted it even lighter, so with the back of the lace paper that I peeled off, I used some blue tack and stick it to my cardstock where I wanted the lace paper to eventually go.  I then used white paint and a dry brush to daub some white paint on the cardstock.  In hindsight I didn't really need to use the backing paper to do this as I could have just daubed stright onto the cardstock, but I thought I'd let you know incase you want to use the same masking technique on another project!!!  Here's how it turned out anyway!

4.  Stick your lace paper down onto the card stock.  I defined the straight edges of the lace paper with white painted dots.
5. Pleat some mesh ribbon along the bottom edge and top this with twisted lace. You may have to secure it in places with some staples

6. From the Savannah - Fairy Dust paper, cut around the flowers and the fairies, ink the edges and slide behind the upper edge of the pleated mesh ribbon

7. Cut a 5 inch circle from the Little Sprout - Baby's Breath paper, ink the edges and place on the right hand side about a third of the way from the top.

8. Sand the edges of your photo and slide behind the flowers and the faires and over the left edge of the circle
9.  Finish with the Kaisercraft Rhinetone word, teeny tiny letters and flower sprays.   I also added some pearl scrolls that were not in the original kit but I just like them and wanted too!!

So if you want to take a bit of the guess work about which papers and embellishments to use, go for a kit.  You'll be surprised by what...and how much...you can come up with from just one kit.

Crate Paper Kit by Melinda Spinks

 SINGLE PAGE LAYOUT

STEP 1.

Using the Aqua card stock cut a strip 24cm wide x 4cm deep and alter the bottom edge... I have used a scallop border punch but you can use anything you like. Adhere to the cream card stock approximately 2cm up from the bottom of the card and spaced evenly each side.

STEP 2.
Using the 'Peyton Ellie' Patterned Paper cut a strip across the bottom of the paper to incorporate the red line measuring 24cm wide x 3cm deep and adhere to the layout overlapping the aqua card stock as shown. Cut a further piece of the Peyton Ellie measuring 24cm wide x 20cm deep and adhere to the layout 2cm down from the top of the layout and centred each side.

STEP 3.
Using the brown card stock cut a rectangle measuring 21.5cm wide x 16.5cm deep and adhere to the layout 5mm up from the bottom of 'Peyton Ellie' printed paper and centred either side.

STEP 4.
Cut another rectangle from the aqua card stock measuring 21cm wide x 16cm deep and adhere to the layout centred on all four sides within the brown card stock.

STEP 5.
Adhere your two photos over the aqua card stock.

STEP 7.
Adhere the large pink paper flower to the layout as shown below. Using adhesive foam to give a raised appearance position the "Little Girls are a gift" die-cut centred over the flower. Also using adhesive foam position the 'precious' die-cut to the left of the pink flower as shown below.  You ca also place a couple of the smaller die-cut flowers over the top right corner of the 'Little Girls are a gift' tag, again using foam tape. Cut in half the brown/white/aqua pin wheel flower and using double sided tape only, adhere to the layout as shown. 

STEP 8.
Using a brown journal pen handwrite your journalling in the cream strip between the two pieces of patterned paper. Also using the brown pen doodle a little dot on each of the scallop joins right across the aqua strip on the bottom of the layout.

STEP 9.
Cut three little triangular nicks out of the card stock approximately 1cm apart from each other on each side of the layout - these nicks only need to be small as they are going to hold the string in place once you wrap it around the back of the layout. Using three equal lengths of string place one across the layout and align with the two top nicks and turn the layout over and tape the ends of the string down. Repeat with the next piece of string moving down to the middle set of nicks and then the final piece of string in the bottom two nicks. Slide a small piece of double sided tape under the string where the die-cut button will sit and gather the three pieces of string together and adhere to the cardstock. Tie a string bow through the holes of the button. Place the button over the gathered join and using foam adhesive tape to give the raised appearence adhere the die-cut button to the layout. Lastly, place a drop of dimensional magic on each of the hand doodled dots across the bottom of the aqua strip and leave to dry, this will create an effect similar to a small rhinestone! You can also put dimensional magic on the die-cut flowers as enhancements.

SINGLE PAGE LAYOUT No. 2

Extra products required:

- One 5 x 7 pic (Portrait orientation)

- Dimensional Magic or Glossy Accents

STEP 1.
Adhere your 5x7 portrait shaped pic to the centre of the layout. Cut 2 strips of paper 3cm wide x 18cm deep from the patterned paper (floral side up) and 1 strip each of the aqua and brown card stock. Adhere one of the floral paper strips to the left of the photograph leaving approx a 3mm gap between the paper and the pic.

PAPER ROLLS: Using the remaining three strips of paper you will need to turn over onto the reverse side and draw a ruled line down the middle of the strip (from top to bottom) which will form your cutting guide. Still using the reverse side of the strips you need to 'fringe cut' 5mm wide tabs all the way along the left hand edge, not cutting past your centre line. These tabs form the little rolls. Place a strip of double sided tape along the back of each strip on the non-cut edge. Turn the strips over and adhere to the layout starting with the brown strip, then place the aqua strip over the brown leaving the pre-cut tabs comletely visible, and repeat with the patterned paper strip which should be 3mm away from the pic.
You will need a quilling tool or tooth pick to make your rolls. Have your layout facing you with the brown strip closest to you and starting from the left hand side of the patterned paper strip roll the first tab away from you. The next tab should be rolled toward you and continue until you get to the end. Repeat with the aqua strip followed by the brown strip.

STEP 2:

Using the die-cut shapes cut the large lime and aqua flower in half and adhere flat to the layout as shown below. Now you can use foam adhesive tape to adhere your title and the large pink/red flower as shown.

STEP 3:

You need to cut three different size circles using the same papers as the strips. The aqua circle should be approximately 8cm across, the brown circle approximately 6cm across and the patterned paper circle approximately 4cm across. Scrunch each circle up into a little ball to give it the 'wrinkled' effect, then un-scrunch them and place them one on top of the other from largest to smallest. Poke two holes in the centre and tie a string bow to hold them together. 

Also cut two leaf shapes from the aqua card stock and using a white journal pen draw on some leaf lines and then fold a crease down the centre of each leaf.

 Adhere the flower and the leaves to the layout and add some of the remaining die-cut pieces to fill in some of the gaps.

STEP 4.

Using a journal pen in either brown or black, write your journalling below the pic as shown below. Once you have completed all the steps you can use dimensional magic or glossy accents to pick out pieces of your layout and give them a little more dimension!

Once the two layouts are complete you still should have enough bits and pieces left to make atleast one card if not two.

Crate Paper - 'Paper Doll' Collection is such a versatile and fun range of products that go with just about any colour scheme - I mean, it's not often you can put pink, lime green and brown together and really make it work!
So, I've designed this kit for maximum use of the product and the ability to use a 'pink' collection on any age group by simply adding some bright and funky colours.

Kit contains:

- Cardstock x 3

- Crate Paper Patterned Papers x 2 double sided

- Crate Paper Journal Slides Sheet

- Alapha Stickers

Double Page Layout

Step 1.
Using both sides of the patterned paper and the lime card stock I cut 32 squares measuring 5cm x 5cm and positioned them in a patchwork theme before adhereing to the two sheets of white card stock. I allowed approximately a 4ml gap in between each square and then left various size gaps for my photos.

Step 2.
I cut two 2cm deep strips of lime cardstock and used a border punch along one edge and then adhered to the layout across the entire bottom of the patchwork and again allowing a 4ml gap.

Step 3.
Now, I don't have a sewing machine so I chose to use the faux sewing method of paper piercing the stitching holes and then drawing a fake stitch using a journalling pen in between each of the squares to give the patchwork theme a bit more authenticity.

Step 4.
Time to adhere your photos into the gaps.

Step 5.
Using the chipboard shapes of your choice place them in random positions across the photos and patchwork to give a balance to the layout.

Step 6.

To finish the layout off I placed alphabet stickers across the top of the patchwork square as a simple and effective form of journalling.

I haven't put a title on the layout due to keeping the kit cost effective, however there are numerous possibilities of making your own title or using thickers that you have in your stash!

Single Layout

Step 1.
Cut a strip of the remaining patterned paper and adhere in a vertical position on the background cardstock. Using the scalloped chipboard border place alongside the patterned paper leaving a 5ml gap. I used a journal pen to doodle around both the border and the paper strip to add a bit of interest.

Step 2.
Mount your pic onto the pink reverse side of the patterned paper and adhere to the layout. Using the same pink side of the paper I cut out a row of little dolls then doodled around the edges before adhering to the layout using foam double sided tape to add dimension.

 Step 3.
You should have several chipboard journal pieces remaining which you can use to create a little story and mount at different heights onto the layout.

Step 4.
Lastly, I used more adhesive letters to place a little title on the page and to add interest to the open side of the layout.

This is a really simple yet effective layout that you can dress up or down depending on the look that you are trying to achieve.

Card

Using most of the remaining materials from the kit I made this bright and funky birthday card that would be ideal for a teenager.

1.The brown scallop paper will sit on the cardstock for our base
2. From the ½ sheet of love potion cut off 4 ½ inches from one end
3. Distress and ink edges of both pieces. We will be using the cream side of the larger piece and the red side of the smaller piece.
4. I have also inked the edges of the book page
5. Adhere as shown

6. Place photo and adhere
7. Take the mesh and twist loosely on itself. Adhere to backside of cardstock with double sided tape

8. Adhere pink flower vine
9. Tie a bow with the brown ribbon. This will be attached at the base of the vine.

10. Select journal tag. Distress and ink edges.


Love letter card


1. From remaining journal spots – cut them in half

2. Adhere mesh down length of card
3. Ink brown check side of one and place on upper half of card
4. Adhere second journal card

5. Attach foam to diecut stamp
6. Adhere
7. Attach pink flower with brown in middle to lower right of card
8. Attach bling flourish
