INSTRUCTIONS FOR PHOTO COLLAGE

In your photo editing program (I used Photoshop Elements 5.0, but the actions are relatively similar for all programs), create a canvas that is 5 inches by 7 inches and has a resolution of 300.

**********

Open a variety of photos that you want to use in your collage. The easy way to make them fit the 5x7 size you have created is to crop them to the perfect size. To do this, use your "crop" tool (mine looks like 2 right angles crossing each other), and use the settings at the top of the screen to crop to the precise measurements. For my collage I used 7 photos that were cropped to 5x2, 5x1, 1.5x4, 1x2, 2.5x2, 1.5x2 and 2x2 (all measurements in inches).

*********

Using the "move" tool (that looks like a pointer with a cross with arrows on the ends), drag your chosen images onto the 5x7 canvas you created. If you are finding it hard to position the photos, Go to "view" and click on "grid". A whole lot of fine lines will appear on your screen, and when you move things they should "snap" to these lines easily. This makes placing things a lot easier.

**********

This collage looks great, but in many cases all your photos will tend to blend together because there are similar colours. To fix this you need a space around each photo. One way of doing this pretty easily is to use the "stroke" function. This outlines the images. My stroke function is under "edit" and "stroke(outline) selection", but this can be different for different programs (Photoshop 7.0 you could access the "stroke" function as a blending option by right-clicking on the layer in the layers pallette). For my collage I used a white colour (you can change it by clicking on the rectangle with the current colour on it) and 20 pixels and set it as "centre". Feel free to change the settings if you want a bigger or a smaller gap.

*********

Once you have done that, save your collage and print it!

INSTRUCTIONS FOR LO

Cut your Making Memories Delany paper a couple of inches from the decorative edge on one side, and about 4-5 inches from the non-decorated edge (enough that when the 2 pieces are put together it will be a mat for your 5x7 photo collage)

**************

Use a blade to cut along the decorative edge on the paper for approximately 7 inches (enough to insert your photo collage into the cut).

**************

Stick the pieces of Delany paper down on the right of the cream cardstock, making sure you line the scalloped edges up with each other. Stick the photo down to the very edge of it is under the decorative edge you have cut. Use the black Grace rub ons to decorate along the bottom of the photo. Using the Carolees Creations tiny black alphas, create a title at the bottom left of your photo collage.

**********
To tie all the colours in the LO together, use a black Green Tara flower, a pastel blue button threaded with a deep pink at the bottom right of the photo collage.

THANKS FOR LOOKING...
HOPE YOU HAVE BEEN INSPIRERED TO GIVE THIS A GO.....
ENJOY......

REMEMBER KITS - Leanne Stamatellos

I have 2 really elegant kits this month to tempt you and what I really like about them, is that you don't need to have photos to complete the layout kit. Sometimes, all you need are words - and that's exactly what I did this time. The black and white and touches of shimmer are very stylish!

REMEMBER LAYOUT KIT
1 sheet of die cut flourish paper
1 black cardstock
1 white cardstock
1 packet of gorgeous shimmer white alphas
half a packet of bella petites

You'll also be sent the image of the layout as well as step by step instructions - not that you need them with my kind of layouts :)

Here is the sneak peak of the REMEMBER layout.
Yes, handwriting too - no need for a computer either - you'll love the simplicty of this.

REMEMBER CARD KIT
2 sheets of black cardstock
1 sheet of white cardstock
1 packet of shimmer white alphas
half a packet of bella petites

The ideas are endless with these gorgeous alphas and journalling squares - it's up to you what you create. And the simplicity of the black and white make this kit so versatile.

And Tanyah, should have the prices of these kits up very soon - stay tuned!

Third Thrusday Tips &Techniques

I have a huge appology for being late with this one this month. Due to a local flood and being evacuated it wasn't possible. But thankfully it didn't come up as high as they first thought originally...So we are all safe home now and the shop is all fine and no need to be worried.

EMBELISHMENTS................

For beginners I often find that your not sure what embellishments are... So what are classed as embellishments?
  • Stickers,
  • Rubons
  • Eyelets
  • Felt
  • brads
  • metal embellishments
  • transparencies
  • flowers
  • bling
  • Buttons
  • Pins
  • Slides
  • Charms
  • Clips
  • Tabs
  • Bows etc
Their is probably many more i have missed but i hope this helps...

Have you ever wondered what embellishments you need apose to ones you just like. Do you find yourself purchasing simply because you think they look cute but have no idea if you will use them let alone when or how....lol!

Well this was me for sure when i started scrapbooking. i LOVED stickers and though scrapping was all about sticking stickers on a layout... oh how wrong i was when i finally got past that!.... I had such a huge collection it was crazy that now my darling daughter and son enjoy using them to make cards to their friends......

So now apart from rubons/ alpha stickers i rarely touch a sticker these days..... Their are ways you can use stickers on your layouts and they look fantastic but here is some ideas of doing this...

  • Group your embelishments together so your eye dosen't wonder all over the page and don't distract your eye from looking at your photos.
  • If you put baby powder on the back of a sticker and use a styles or a shapping tool and shape your sticker and then use some foam tape on the back to pop it out.
  • Use stickers that are clear or DONT have a white edgeing around them..... I was told once that stickers with the white edging have a childish look about it... and i hadn't thought of it like that until then.

There are many many embellishments and one key thing to remember when using shaped embelishments is to ask yourself
  • Dose it relate to the page?
  • Sometimes it is their simply cause you are going through a fad at the time and you just have to put or have one on your layouts/projects......

LOVE TO KNOW YOUR THOUGHTS ON THIS ...........

This month i have asked my design team of what embellishments they love using the most and what brands......

Here is what they had to say...
  • I love Embellishments. I think they make a page.
  • They give it that final touch.
  • Some of my favourite embellishments are: Buttons, flowers, Bling, felt, chipboard and textured ribbons.
  • These feature quite heavily on my pages.
  • Some of my favourite embellishments at the moment are Francheville “Cutie pie” buttons, 7 Gypsies Black and white polka dot gaffa tape and handmade sculpey buttons.
  • I also make a lot of my own embellishments from various mediums.
  • I think it gives them an “original” look to your work.

By..... Michelle Jamieson.

See some embellishments ( chellebean designs) that chelle has made in our shop.
***************************************************

  • I can't live without rubons - I love them - swirls, straight decorative borders, alphas ... anything really. I especially love white ones - they look so striking against black cardstock.
  • So many companies are doing the most gorgeous rubons - I love American Crafts alot - so many elegant and current designs.

Leanne's APRIL CHALLENGE - winners announced!

Well, this was my first challenge here on Diary of a Scrapaholic and I was pretty excited to see some layouts posted using the criteria that I set - something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue. The tough part was deciding who should get the $20 prize credit.
I was blown away by the creativity of everyone.

Susan Cashin's LO - the idea of bowworing the wheels off broken toy cars was really cool - loved that idea.

Gayatri Murali's LO - this layout was beautifully balanced and very elegant. I loved the flower placement.

Alison Callcott's LO - who would have thought to use string from the kitchen drawer for the something old part? This was a cool layout.

Ramintessah Aihara - this birdcage paper was so adorable - the pink and yellow colour scheme was just gorgeous.

Lucy Woodham - I was honored to have someone 'borrow' my style - very clever - and I adored that little tree in the top corner.

So, what's a girl to do when there are 5 worthy layouts all for different reasons?
Well, I spoke to Tanyah about my dilema ... and here's what we're going to do ....

YOU ALL GET $5.00 store credit - how cool is that?

Congratulations and thank you for playing along with this challenge - you all deserve a little something. Tanyah will email you soon with a voucher.

Take care, Leanne Stamatellos

Step 1

Cut about 2cm off on 2 sides of the white cardstock and layer it on top of the red cardstock.

Step 2

Use the Kaisercraft Black Pearl strip and add a borner 1 cm inside the white cardstock.

Step 3

Cut the Imainisce paper slightly bigger than the photo, mabe 7x5" and scallop tow sides of the piece and pierce the holes as shown in the photo.
Cut another long strip of the Imaginisce paper so that it will go through the buckle.

Cut a medium size circle of the same paper but I am using the flower side of the paper
Ink all of them on the edges using black ink

Step 4

Stick the photo on the scallop pattern paper with the scalloped edges showing on one side.
Stick the circle and the calloped pattern paper with the photo as shown in the picture

Similarly layer the other black flower with another flower punch out and secure them using the red brad

Step 7

Adhere both the flowers layer as shown i the picture below

******************
Step 8

Using the red pearls decorate as shown int he picuture

Step 9

Add your title using alphas of your choice. I have used Basic Grey large cardstock stickers from the Granola range. You could use smaller alphas and long titles as well.
