Saturday Scrapping Stimulus...

Music. How boring would life be without it? Movies wouldn't have that suspensful build-up that makes you jump when something scary happens, babies wouldn't go to sleep as easily without their lullabyes and us adults wouldn't have somewhere to escape to while stuck in peak-hour traffic!

"A painter paints pictures on canvas. But musicians paint their pictures on silence."
~Leopold Stokowski
I'd love to see you create something this weekend about how music has influenced you. Maybe your favourite band or song, possibly the song that played at your wedding or birthday, what about your children's favourite songs (the ones played 20 times in a row that make you want to snap the CD in half...). Whatever you do, enjoy a wonderfully scrappy weekend!

Sketch by Lizzy Kable - challenge from the Scraplounge.

On the weekend the Scraplounge had a cybercrop which I managed to only do one layout and upload it late....oh well it was fun anyway though.

Here is my layout titled 'Peaceful'....
This is a very old photo of my ben at the far left, his friends and then Katie holding the stick. They are all so tiny in this pic and it is a shame they all have to grow up way too fast!....

Anyone that knows my style this is a lot of white space for me!...lol! man alive i so badly wanted to put more on it!....lol.

I have used the following:

Single Step by step layout by Amanda Moran

“A Love of Music” Layout

Materials used:

I almost always use plain coloured cardstock (kraft is my favourite) as the base for all my layouts. I decided to try something different with this layout and have the pretty pattern paper as the base for the layout. My Minds Eye Abbey Road Whirlybird “Shine” pattern paper and pale blue Bazzill cardstock I cut piece of the Bazzill 22cm x 27 cm .

Because the pattern paper is so lovely, before adhering the cardstock, I’ve cut a piece of the pattern paper out (using my metal ruler and craft knife) 19cm x 21.5cm .
You never know we might use some of this again later! Ink the edges of your cardstock if you like then adhere the cardstock on the front of your pattern paper ensuring it is relatively evenly spaced over the hole you cut see the backside view .

With the Whirlybird “Shine” diecut journal piece – I punched out a scallop either side of each corner and added some bling to the corners – just to jazz it up a bit !
Put the journal spot to one side we’ll use it later.

Another additional feature I like to add is some sewing. So if you want to you can sew around the edge of your cardstock. I kept it fairly straight this time but sometimes I like the messy look and go around a few times
!
If you don’t have a sewing machine you can always hand sew around it OR using a journaling pen doodle some ‘fake’ sewing stitches around.

I planned to put the word ‘love’ in my title so I found a small chipboard heart in my stash and glued it to the pattern paper piece I’d saved from earlier (see told you we’d use it!) and I also punched a few circles out to use in the photo corner cluster we are building !

While the chipboard heart & glue is drying, cut two small pieces of coordinating pattern paper (I’ve used Whirlybird “Best Friends” Scattered Flowers) approximately 60mm x 10mm and 60mm x 25mm. Ink the edges of these if you like – I used a nice bright pink ink. Place the large piece of pattern paper under the top right hand corner of your photo as you adhere it to the top right hand corner of the cardstock.

Now for the cluster: this is going on the bottom right hand corner of the photo. I’ve used the chipboard heart (which I cut out with my craft knife and lightly sanded the edges), a pink flower and one of Chelly Bean Designs Romantic Roses. I’ve used a button & thread to centre the paper flower and a pattern paper circle to centre the rose. Place these over the edge of the photo, cardstock and pattern paper .

Add the title underneath the photo & cluster. I’ve used American Craft thickers AND smaller alphabet stickers.

Next we’ll add the journaling diecut we jazzed up earlier. I’ve used a combination of handwriting and small alpha stickers to emphasize certain words in the journaling. You might notice I’ve also included on of Tara’s old clarinet reeds to the journaling block .
This is placed to the left of the title.

For the final touch I’ve added to other small rectangle of green pattern paper overlapping the cardstock and pattern paper on the left hand side under the journal diecut. I’ve also add three Kaiser bling to each of those small rectangle pieces!

Thank you manda for this lovely layout!

THE THOUGHT BEHIND THE PROCESS

Good morning everyone - what another fabulous day for creating.  In the layout I want to share today I have scraps of different printed papers I wanted to use up. When I go to a crop with friends I end up with so many off cuts so now I make sure that I take them with me when I go so that i utilise them.

This layout has  was a bit of everything that just came together.

I started by having a couple photos of my son that i wanted to scrap - he was being very cheeky on his way to guitar practice at school...I was lucky enough that there was a great range of colors in them. I then set about foraging through my off cuts and picking out a few that I felt suited the pictures. They may not necessarily gone together but they suited the pictures.

After i sat my photos onto the page i manouevered the papers around so that they would be pleasing to my eye. Then Iopened up the buttons... i am not a button person, but they do add a lot of depth and help tie things together on a layout. They worked perfectly because of all the different papers I have used.

After I had everything in place I found that the layout was still a little bland. Using a dark color background the photos got lost on the page in the jumble of papers and buttons so, I whipped out the white pen and did a little bordering on the corners of the page near my photos - it was an instant lift.

Oh and about that masking tape.... I needed something to add behind my buttons so that they stood out more, the tape was handy and looks effective I think and also helps tie the papers together with the photos as it is placed over the layers.

So that was my thought on this one. Until next time enjoy your sunshiney day.

Saturday Scrapping Stimulus...

Welcome to another weekend everyone!
Today I wanted to honour our silent and usually well-loved friends in my Saturday post - our teddies. Who didn't have a well-loved teddy bear or toy when they were growing up? I know I LOVED my big Paddington bear (and was devastated when my mum threw him out. So what if he only had one eye and a huge hole where his nose used to be??), and I still have the little vibrant green hippo that was given to me on the day I was born. My kids have their favourites too. Elizabeth has an emu called Memu and a teddy bear named, imaginatively enough, Teddy Bear, while Phillip cannot sleep without his Nigh Nigh Bear!

"A bear remains a bear - even when most of him has fallen off or worn away."
~Charlotte Gray
So this weekend I'd love to see you create something to honour those best friends of years gone by (or even current friends. My mum still sleeps with a teddy!). Take a trip down memory lane and rediscover your old silent friend.

Layouts to share by Sarah and a Step by step sketch.

Today we have a layout by Sarah Rickard..

Thank you sarah for sharing your layout with us.
I love how sarah has
  • sewn around the edges
  • Used her scollop punch for the edges instead of leaving it straight
  • also has used the paper ribbon and stapled each end to hold it their
Here is a Step by Step I have done to help create a layout. Layouts don't have to be complicated or too hard.....
I hope this is easy to follow and you have a go and place your layout in our GALLERY

Step 1
Place a strip at the bottom

step 2
Place a wider strip along the left edge making sure it is wider than your photo.

Step 3
Place photo over the large part of the paper

Step 4
Place a tiny strip across the photo
Title and journal your story

********************************************

Here are some layouts sarah has created using the same paper

and here is a close up of Sarah's cluster of embellishments.

Sarah has used in her cluster some We R memory Keepers Gromet and Yullip Design embellishment.

Thank you for sharing these with us and hope to see your layouts using this step by step sketch in our GALLERY

Stamped fabric embellishments by Allison Callcott

Towards the end of last year I was fortunate to participate in an online class by Tracey Thorne on inspiration cards working with mixed media. One of the requirements for that class was a piece of blue fabric with a flourish. Not something I had in my stash. Should I go out and buy some fabric for just the one card? Sure I’d probably use the fabric again, but my stash was starting to look like I was a quilter not a scrapper! I figured there had to be another way. I came up with the answer that night as I lay in bed thinking (obsessing LOL?!) about that blue fabric with a flourish but its only now (probably about three months later!) that I’ve had the time to sit down and play. And play, and play, and play, I did. So come with me on this journey of making our own stamped fabric embellishments, I promise you’ll have some fun, and then some …

List of materials

* an apron and plastic gloves – if you want to keep your clothes and hands clean
* Wet Ones (or similar) and tissues – fun stuff can get messy!
* Inkssentials craft sheet – if you don’t have one spread out lots of paper (oh and buy one!)
* containers and paddle pop sticks for mixing water and re-inkers
* scrap paper – make sure it is clean (ie, does not have any printing or other inks on it)
* scissors – I used pinking shears (not pictured)

* white fabric – mine was a stiff fabric but I have no idea what it is (sorry)
* Tim Holtz Distress Ink inkpads
(I used Spiced Marmalade, Broken China, Vintage Photo, Shabby Shutters & Worn Lipstick)
* Tim Holtz Distress Ink re-inkers – the same colours as the inkpads
* stamps – acrylic or rubber (I used a Heidi Swapp clear stamp and various SU! stamps)

Optional extras (not pictured)

* various trims and ribbons
* cardstock
* template/mask – I used TCW Daisy Cluster
* Ranger mini misters
* water mister

Getting started

Once you have gathered all your supplies, cut squares of fabric approximately 6”x6”, small ‘swatches’ measuring approximately 3”x2”, and sample stamping pieces approximately 3”x4”. I cut five of each of the sizes as I was working with five colours . Set up your inkpads with their corresponding re-inkers, containers with paddle pop sticks, and your stamp. At this time, because I was set on creating a flourish, patterned fabric, I worked with a Heidi Swapp clear acrylic stamp ‘Damask’.

Let the fun begin

Inking your stamp well and evenly, stamp your inked stamp with each of the colours you are working with onto one of the sample stamping pieces of white fabric. At this time, try to get a ‘feel’ for how heavily you need to ink your stamp and how firmly you need to press your stamp onto the fabric, given the type of fabric, and the stamp, you are using yourself. Set the sample pieces aside, keeping one to continue working with.

Gather a 6”x6” fabric square, a small fabric swatch, a container and paddle pop stick, water, a re-inker, the sample stamped image in the same colour as the re-inker, and scrap paper.

Fill your container with water until it is approximately two-thirds full. Add several drops of the re-inker, and mix with the paddle pop stick. At this time remember that less is more. We can always add more of the re-inker to the water to intensify the colour of the distress ink dye we are making. It is not so easy to de-saturate the colour without then using a larger container and more water.

Dip your fabric swatch into the distress ink dye and check the intensity of the colour. Add more drops of the re-inker if required. Leave your fabric swatch soaking in the container for a short time (ie, less than a minute); lift out with the paddle pop stick and check the colour against your sample stamped image. The colour of the dyed swatch must be lighter than the colour of the ink on your sample stamped image if this technique is to work. Once you are happy with the colour of the distress ink dye, submerge your 6”x6” fabric square into the container and once ready, place flat on your clean scrap paper, with the swatch, to dry. Please note the photos below show exactly why you should use clean scrap paper. I initially thought to reuse and recycle paper that had been printed on with my inkjet printer; not a good idea given that inkjet inks are water-soluble and we are working not only with water, but also water-based inks. D’oh!

Optional extras

Whilst waiting for my five dyed 6”x6” fabric squares to dry I decided to have a play with the distress ink dyes; otherwise it felt like such a waste to simply pour them down the drain. So I poured three of my distress ink dyes (Broken China, Vintage Photo, and Shabby Shutters) into Ranger mini misters and, together with the re-inkers in the same colours, set to work making a mess (LOL).

* First up I sprayed a freshly cut piece of fabric with water before applying the re-inkers direct to the dampened fabric with the eyedroppers in the lids. To assist the inks spreading and running into each other, I sprayed the fabric with more water. Next up I dragged the fabric through the ink and water that had collected on the Inkssentials craft mat. I set this aside to dry.

* Next I sprayed the three distress ink dyes onto another piece of freshly cut fabric, and set that aside to dry.

* I then selected a piece of cardstock lighter than the Broken China distress ink dye I had made, a TCW template (Daisy Cluster), and using the template as a mask, sprayed the distress ink dye onto the cardstock.

* Finally, because I still had a fair amount of the distress ink dyes I had made, I completely submerged various ribbons and trims in each of the five colours. There were also set aside to dry.

Cleaning up as we go

By now I had finished with the distress ink dyes I had made and to create some desperately needed space on my desk it was time to start cleaning up. Please take care (LOL … you’ll soon see why!!) when disposing of your distress ink dyes and handling the re-inker bottles. Maybe do the cleaning up in your laundry? Any and all suggestions for how to clean the grout between my kitchen floor tiles would be gladly received. (oops)

The final steps

Now that my fabric pieces were dry (okay I confess … with a little bit of help from the iron set to a moderate setting on dry) it was time to get stamping. Using a variety of stamps including, Heidi Swapp clear stamp Damask, and Stampin’ Up! Stamps Inspired by Nature, Petal Prints, Upsy Daisy, and Circle Circus, and the same inkpad colour as the dyed piece of fabric, I transformed my plain coloured pieces of fabric into patterned fabrics that could be used on their own or have patterned sections cut out.

For something different, I used the Vintage Photo inkpad to stamp the image onto the two pieces of mixed coloured fabrics I had created in the ‘Optional Extras’.

I am delighted with my stamped fabric embellishments. I look forward to using them on future projects (so keep an eye out for them!) and am surprised that what started as a search for a blue fabric flourish turned into this! LOL it would have been sooooo much easier to simply buy some fabric. BTW if you have survived this step by step tutorial to the end … congratulations, and thank you!
